About Us
In 1925, my maternal great grandmother, Oris Simmons, purchased 146 acres of land north of Kerens, Texas. At that time the government was discussing enlarging the Trinity River to get freight ships to Dallas. Many believed this project would end at Kerens, making Kerens a large city in Texas. My great grandmother bought the land so the government would have to buy it from her for this project or at least as the warehouse, pier district. Even in the 50’s this river project was still in talks. That is why the bridge over the Trinity River on Hwy 31 is so tall, so ships can go under it.
In 2019, my father, E E Schafer, purchased another 199 acres adjoined to the original 146 acres.
In 2020, to uphold the agriculture exemption, I purchased 2 Longhorns. After my father’s death in 2021, the 246 acres was gifted to me by my mother. The S Bar S Ranch was born, Simmons and Schafer.
My daughter and I manage the small family ranch. We breed and raise registered Longhorns. We started purchasing longhorn cow with some good pedigrees. We have had many AI'ed heifer sexed to increase the herd and to add other good lines.
We plan to have a herd of 30-40 Longhorns enjoying our large tanks, great coastal grasses and lots of land to roam. We strive for happy, healthy, well built cattle.
